Power, Cable Size and Fuses

This post shows how to use power to work out the current and then the cable size. It also shows appropriate fuses for the size of the cable used.

Notes

1.   The current flowing through a cable is worked out by dividing the power by the voltage.

2.   The higher the voltage the smaller the current.

3.   Choose the biggest cable that you can practically use.

4.    The fuse / circuit breaker needs to be between the current flowing and the Max current of the cable.

5.    The most current flows between the Battery and the Power Inverter and this usually has the thickest cable.

6.   For power up to 1000 Watts, Battery voltage of 12 V works well. The cable size is 20 mm 2.

7.   For power over 1000 Watts, you will need to work at 24 V - ie 2 Batteries in series.
